#WeAreReady to invest in our future.

True to our platform of standing up for poor and working class families, on April 17th the Nathan Clay For Congress campaign submitted the “Free College For Colorado” citizen’s initiative for the 2018 ballot. The purpose of the initiative is to create a scholarship that would cover the costs associated with going to Colorado public colleges for Colorado citizens. We would like to ask the people of Colorado for feedback and advice on the details of the law that we are proposing. The following is an outline of the initiative if you’re interested in taking a look!

FREE COLLEGE FOR COLORADO

The purpose of this initiative is to create a scholarship for all Colorado citizens that would cover the costs associated with attending any Colorado public college.

The scholarship would cover:

  • The cost of tuition, lab fees, and required books & equipment for full-time and part-time students.

  • The cost of on-campus room & board for full-time students from families making less than $130,000/year.

  • A maximum amount of 150 semester credit hours per student.

  • Only the difference between a student’s existing financial aid – such as grants and scholarships – and the remaining costs associated with going to school.

Qualifications for the scholarship would be:

  • Must qualify for in-state tuition in Colorado.

  • Must complete FAFSA and accept all available federal grants.

  • Must not currently possess a Bachelor’s Degree or higher.

  • Must take courses to stay on a degree path.

  • Must maintain a 2.0 GPA minimum.

  • No age-based restrictions.

  • Recipients must stay in Colorado for the same number of years they received funding.

We live in a fiercely competitive economy. This initiative will prepare Colorado for the dynamic job market of the future – while unleashing the economic power and freedom of the citizens of our our state. Colorado already has a flourishing tech industry and with this legislation employers from a variety of demanding fields will come to know Colorado as the state with the best educated workforce in the nation. By alleviating the debt burden associated with going to school, students will have more money to save and begin their lives on sound financial footing. Supporting this initiative is saying #WeAreReady to invest in our future.
